They were glue laminated beams 25 feet long and they looked like "glue lams". That wasn't the look of rustic elegance the home owner had in mind. You can see them in the bottom of the first photograph..
The client has custom alder doors and trim throughout and wanted his Great Room beams to harmonize. In the second photograph you can see the first phase of the graining process.
Transforming the glue lams into alder was a naughty problem that I solved with special colors, glazes and four hundred dollars worth of specialty custom made brushes.
